Autism, in a nutshell...

Autism and Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are defined as a complex group of disorders in brain development.

It is a condition a child is born with - meaning, it is currently not considered to be a disorder that manifests over time, although many professionals agree that several factors could contribute to the exhauserbation of this condition. Often you will come across many of the following:

diet, environmental factors, treatments for mis-diagnosed conditions, and other considerations like immune deficiency problems, food allergies or sensitivities, fragile X syndrome. These have all been "connected to" but not deemed "causes of" Autism/ASD.

The truth is, there is no known CAUSE of Autism, although recent research suggests strongly that it is likely a genetic disorder.

The three areas looked at that are used by doctors to diagnose an Autism or ASD designation are related to Behavioural, Social, and Language criteria. The spectrum is huge, ranging from pervasive developmental disorders - not otherwise specified, to Autism, to Aspergers Syndrome.

Through the use of the CARS assessment (Childhood Autism Rating Scale,) professionals can identify the severity of the child's Autism diagnosis, and the four catagories considered as an Autism specific diagnosis are mild, moderate, severe, and profound Autism.

Theory in practice... Daily.

What Autistic/ASD children and non-autistic/ASD children have in common, is that first and foremost, they are all CHILDREN.

This may seem rather obvious - but you would be surprised how quickly an Autistic child who is non-verbal is assumed to not need some basic considerations. For instance, inclusion, praise, or simply the time to process what is going on.

My goal in developing this website is to stop the dogma of "trying to fix what is wrong with the child," and to start the focus on "What is wrong with the current approaches from parenting, to teaching, to intervention programs.

Children are not developing the skill sets to learn, become valuable autonomous members of society, and to thrive in their childhood. They are missing out on opportunities to expand and grow their natural incredible abilities that they were born with; and others were not.

We need a new structure for the treatment of Autism, not just medically, but PERSONALLY. The child, the family, the community - EVERYONE can stand to gain from a deeper understanding of this condition, and fresh methods of approaching it from a space where the child is not "broken" but rather, "needed", "appreciated", and "worthy of the support, time, energy and love."

This particular article made me cry - Because it explained in terms that anyone could understand, what it is that we are dealing with.

A Neuroscientist from the states has a child with Autism, and sought to find answers. If there is no other publication that you read, please read this one.

Insightful, enlightening, and could help you to explain to others overall what we are dealing with.
